Laudato si' - Praised be - is not only the title of the Pope's new encyclical letter, it's also the introductory phrase to eight verses of St Francis of Assisi's famous prayer thanking God for the gifts of creation - the 'Canticle of the Creatures' or 'Canticle of Brother Sun'. Saint Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) composed this song in the Umbrian dialect of Italian around the time that Italian began to distinguish itself from Latin.
